Definition - What does Non-Systemic Pesticide mean?

A non-systemic pesticide is any formulation applied to a plant (cannabis or otherwise) directly onto its foliage, flowers, buds, stems, branches, roots, or seeds that is intended to control pests or diseases by making direct contact with them.

The primary target for most non-systemic pesticides are flying and chewing insects, as well as larger sucking insects or in the case of non-systemic fungicides, on mildews and fungi.

Another type of non-systemic pesticide is one that can only travel short distances in the plant, such as with translaminar pesticides that can travel into the leaf, but not further into the plant’s vascular system.

Non-systemic pesticides on cannabis are often used for spot treatments and “hot spots” of insect or disease activity. They are also usually better for treating mature cannabis plants as systemic insecticides may not work quickly enough before too much damage is done.

Non-systemic pesticides, however, only work if they make physical contact with the cannabis pest or disease. As such, they are not typically used for preventative treatments. Both organic and synthetic non-systemic pesticides are available for cannabis cultivation.

Non-systemic pesticides are sometimes preferred because they completely wash off the plant, helping to ensure nothing harmful remains in the final product.
