Marijuana Abuse

Last updated: August 13, 2018

What Does Marijuana Abuse Mean?

Historically, marijuana abuse has been defined as the general use of marijuana, which is an illegal drug according to the United State’s federal government. However, in recent years, marijuana for medicinal and recreational use has been legalized in many states, which has blurred to definition of what constitutes as marijuana 'abuse'.

Nowadays, marijuana abuse is difficult to define. In its most general definition, marijuana abuse can said to be a person whose cannabis use is interfering with their day-to-day responsibilities, and they are unwilling or unable to correct the problem. Someone who abuses marijuana typically overindulges, don't see the harm in their actions, and don't see the need to reduce their intake.

Maximum Yield Explains Marijuana Abuse

Many people view marijuana use in a similar manner as alcohol. In other words, a social drinker is comparable to a recreational marijuana user, but both alcohol and marijuana can be used in excess and abused.

At the federal level, marijuana abuse remains a very real thing. The US Department of Health and Human Resources still estimates that one in 11 marijuana users will go on to abuse marijuana and become an addict. However, the fine line of what denotes abuse remains unclear in the United States with the changing state laws.

Many people may consider marijuana abuse a problem when the use of the plant starts to dominate their life and interferes with their job and personal relationships. The user may use excessive amounts of marijuana and be unable to stop.

When the chronic use of cannabis starts to take center stage in the person’s life at the cost of everything else, then it becomes abuse, which is similar to the abuse of alcohol and other substances.
