What Does Cannabis Cup Mean?
While it might sound like a sporting event, the Cannabis Cup is actually a trade show. It is held annually, and is sponsored by High Times. The Cannabis Cup involves seminars and expositions, but also competitions and product showcases. Winners are announced each year.
Maximum Yield Explains Cannabis Cup
All industries have trade shows where manufacturers get together to show off their wares, processes, and products. The marijuana industry is no different. However, the highest-profile trade show in the legalized marijuana industry is called Cannabis Cup, and it takes a more sporting event theme than most industry trade shows.
The Cannabis Cup has been held every year for the past 30 years, and is only held in states that have already legalized marijuana (either medical or medical and recreational legalization). The trade show is sponsored by High Times, which is probably the highest profile marijuana-focused magazine in the world.
Note that prior to US states legalizing marijuana, the Cannabis Cup was only held in international locations amenable to marijuana use, most notably in Amsterdam. It still occurs in Europe, but has spread to other areas. For instance, it was held in Southern California in November 2017, and is scheduled for Jamaica in March 2018. It has also split into the International Cannabis Cup (Amsterdam, Jamaica, etc.) and the US Cannabis Cup (So-Cal, Colorado, etc.).
In addition to being a trade show were marijuana-related companies can show their wares, the Cannabis Cup is also a festival. Each year, a winning marijuana strain is announced, as well. The first winner was Skunk #1, with other strains of note including Jack Herer, White Widow, Tangerine Dream, Flower Bomb Kush, Super Lemon Haze, Cookies Kush, Liberty Haze, Super Silver Haze and Early Pearl to name only a few.
