Dialed In

Last updated: November 18, 2021

What Does Dialed In Mean?

'Dialed in' is a slang phrase used in many different areas, not just the world of medical marijuana. In almost all areas, it carries the same or a similar meaning – well-coordinated, working perfectly. Contrast this with the phrase “phoned in”, which generally carries the opposite connotations – not trying, not coordinated.

Maximum Yield Explains Dialed In

Slang terms and phrases are used in all aspects of life, from “cool” used to mean neat, interesting or acceptable, to “hot” used to mean attractive or popular. One phrase that you will encounter both in the world of medical cannabis and in the wider world is 'dialed in'.

Generally, the phrase is used to mean that something is working well, efficiently, or is well coordinated. For instance, a grow room that is dialed in would be designed for optimum production and plant growth, and require only the minimum effort from the grower. This means that lighting schedules, air circulation, nutrient levels, and temperatures and humidity levels are all perfectly dialed in to the best parameters for the plants.

With that being said, there can be some confusion between dialed in and phoned in. That’s natural, since phones once had dials, and both phrases stem from telephony in general (although the Oxford English Dictionary points out that dialed in originated in the world of automobile engine tuning).

With that being said, the phrase “phoned in” has the opposite meaning of “dialed in”. Rather than well-coordinated or efficient, it generally means lacking in coordination or efficiency. Someone who is phoning it in is doing only the bare minimum to get by – they do not care to excel.

“Dial in” can be used as a verb, as in “he needs to dial in his nutrient solution”, meaning that the solution needs to be perfected. It can also be used as an adjective, in which it would mean that a process has been perfected or streamlined.
