What Does Cheech and Chong Mean?

Cheech & Chong is the moniker commonly used to refer to the comedian duo of Richard ‘Cheech’ Marino and Tommy Chong. The pair rose to stardom in the 1970s and 1980s for their widely acclaimed motion pictures and their blatantly bold stand-up comedy acts that openly referred to marijuana and other drug usages.

Cheech & Chong became famous for their hippie vibe and their advocacy of counterculture movements. Neither one has ever made their use of cannabis secret. At various times during their lives, they have both faced drug paraphernalia charges.

Today, Cheech and Chong both remain strong proponents for marijuana legalization. They have become known affectionately as the 'patron saints of cannabis'.

Maximum Yield Explains Cheech and Chong

Richard ‘Cheech’ Marino and Tommy Chong met during the 1960s in Vancouver, B.C. The two quickly formed the Cheech & Chong partnership as they started to perform stand-up routines together. They also recorded a couple of comedy albums that featured skits and songs.

Together they starred in a few low budget films. In 1978, they had their first big break with their feature film Up In Smoke, which quickly became a cult classic. Two sequels followed: Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie and Nice Dreams. The films were considered ‘stoner’ comedies because they contained rampant marijuana usage throughout and continued drug references.

The duo would go on to make numerous other movies and launch solo careers. During the 1980s, the two parted ways to explore other career paths, but in 2008, the team of Cheech & Chong reunited and they continue to work together on various projects.
