Hemp Protein

Last updated: November 18, 2021

What Does Hemp Protein Mean?

Hemp protein is a powdered protein supplement derived from the hemp plant, although not from a species with high levels of THC.

Plant-based protein is an important supplement for many athletes, including body builders, runners, and others.

Hemp protein is also an important source of dietary protein for vegetarians and vegans who do not consumer animal meat.

Maximum Yield Explains Hemp Protein

When it comes to protein sources, most people automatically think of meat. However, that’s largely due to the meat industry’s slick marketing campaigns for the past 40 or 50 years. The truth is that most plants also contain high levels of protein, and hemp protein compares very favorably with other types on the market.

Hemp protein is generally found in powdered form, and it is usually added to shakes or mixed with water and then consumed. It provides an important pre and post workout supplement for athletes ranging from endurance runners to body builders and many others to help build lean muscle mass.

You’ll find both hemp and whey protein on the market today. Of the two, whey formulations actually contain more protein per ounce of powder, but this comes with some drawbacks. Whey is a dairy product, which means that many vegans and vegetarians will not use it. There’s also the question of lactose intolerance with some formulations. While hemp protein doesn’t have quite the same amount of protein per ounce, it is completely plant derived.

Hemp protein is also more digestible than whey protein, and these formulations usually lack the “fillers” found in whey protein formulas, such as taurine, making it a purer source than other options on the market.
