Biosynthesis

Last updated: November 17, 2021

What Does Biosynthesis Mean?

Biosynthesis is a process by which simple matter from a living organism is used to create a different form of more complex matter within the same biological entity. This is done through the action of enzymes.

Biosynthesis happens naturally in all life forms, but can also be induced in a lab, research, or academic setting. In the biosynthesis of cannabis, THC, cannabinoids, and even terpenes can be created through this lab-based process.

Biosynthesis is not the same process that creates synthetic versions of THC, such as those found in Marinol; those such compounds do not contain actual cannabis or extracts.

Maximum Yield Explains Biosynthesis

The induced biosynthesis of cannabidiol or THC is an emerging prospect. In research published in 2015, a yeast was created that could then be used at the researcher’s discretion, a range of cannabinoids, numerous terpenes and even THC, all without having to grow a single plant. This technology may allow for the mass production of such products for use in the extracts and edibles markets.

It is thought that biosynthesis may prove in time to be seen as a force multiplier, or it may lead to a reduction through competition in the number of individuals or companies growing marijuana.
