Induce Flowering

Last updated: August 22, 2018

What Does Induce Flowering Mean?

Induce flowering is a cannabis cultivation term that refers to forcing a marijuana plant into the flowering stage earlier than nature intended.

A cannabis plant will naturally complete its lifecycle, going from the vegetative stage to the flowering stage without much interference from the grower, but many growers often like to induce flowering to encourage faster yields.

A cannabis plant naturally starts to flower when it begins to experience 12 hours or less of sunlight per day. There are several ways that a grower can make the cannabis plant flower. For example, controlling artificial lighting helps induce flowering in the plant. A strict 12-hour light cycle causes the cannabis plant to create flowers and buds.

Light control can also be achieved by covering and uncovering the plant at 12-hour intervals. Growers also frequently use fertilizers that have been designed to make the plant enter the flowering stage.

Maximum Yield Explains Induce Flowering

Light is the major key component to induce flowering in the cannabis plant. The plant should be kept completely dark for 12 hours each day. The dark periods automatically induce flowering in the plant by making the plant think it is entering the autumn months.

Depending on the cannabis strain, it can take anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks for flowering to start naturally in most strains of cannabis. However, growers tend to manipulate that time frame by causing the plant to flower at two to four weeks into the vegetative stage by controlling the environmental conditions around the plant.

The best time to induce flowering in the cannabis plant depends on several factors, such as the plant’s size. Some growers let their plants grow in the vegetative stage for longer to produce a larger yield, but other growers want a quick harvest. Once the plant starts to enter the flowering time, it will increase in size by 30 to 50 per cent, and then start to produce flowers and buds.
