Definition - What does Photosynthesis mean?

Photosynthesis is the natural process plants use to make food for themselves. All plants, ranging from cyanobacteria, to mosses, to grasses to trees, to marijuana, need to undergo this process daily. Plants need light, either from the sun or artificial lighting, water, and carbon dioxide to carry out the photosynthesis process.

Through photosynthesis, cannabis plants convert the water and carbon dioxide into sugars that they use and store for energy to perform their various functions. Plants generate the oxygen (O2) that we breathe as a waste product from this process.

Cannabis grown outside can generally perform the vital function of photosynthesis without any additional aid. However, cannabis grown indoors requires quite a bit of help to carry this out.

Grow lights generally need to be used in indoor cannabis cultivation, unless the plants are in a greenhouse setting where they can still receive natural light. Even these, though, can benefit from additional artificial lighting during darker times of the year. All indoor plants need to receive adeqequte amounts of water from some form of irrigation.

As for CO2, whether or not indoor cannabis requires additional carbon dioxide to photosynthesize will depend upon how it’s being grown. In a greenhouse, or other open setting, it may not be needed. However, in a closet, grow room, or tent type of set-up, additional CO2 may need to be added to the space in sufficient levels for photosynthesis.

It's important to replenish all of the inputs plants use during photosynthesis at just the right rates in order to product healthy, productive yields.
