Last updated: November 18, 2021

What Does Doobie Mean?

Synonymous to a joint, a doobie is a slang word used in pop culture in reference to a marijuana cigarette. The word originally came to use in the United States of America in the 1960s and stuck around, but the exact origin of the term ‘doobie’ is still unknown.

There are now countless slang terms used to reference cannabis, including ganja, Mary Jane, reefer, grass, and dozens of others. When cannabis was highly illegal around the world and use was frowned upon, slang terms like these helped people somewhat disguise or hide their cannabis use, especially from their parents. Many of these terms have stuck around, including the term doobie.

Maximum Yield Explains Doobie

Various theories have been come up with for the origin of the slang term ‘doobie’. Some believe that the word is derived from the Latin word ‘dubiety’, which could mean giving rise to uncertainty or something questionable or suspect as to true nature or quality.

When a doobie is smoked, it alters one’s perception, giving a false sense of reality, leaving things uncertain and questionable. Another theory some believe is the same as the first one, only this time it is believed that the root of the word doobie is derived from the English word 'dubious', which in turn means doubt, uncertainty, or questionable in nature.
