Definition - What does Marijuana mean?
Also known as weed, cannabis, or ganja, marijuana is a plant that has psychoactive properties and is used as a recreational drug and a medicine. Specifically, the term marijuana refers to the female cannabis plants, which are the ones that produce flowers. These flowers are the part of a cannabis plant that contain Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive part of the plant, as well as the other valuable cannabinoids.
Marijuana can be used by smoking, vaporizing, with food or as an extract. Cannabis gives the user a feeling of being “high”, which in turn gives a general change of perception with heightened mood/sensation of euphoria and in many cases an increase in appetite.
Marijuana has side effects for both short term and long term. As for the short term, some side effects are a decrease in short-term memory, dry mouth, impaired motor skills, red eyes, and feelings of paranoia or anxiety. Meanwhile, long-term side effects include addiction, decreased mental ability in those who started as teenagers, and behavioral problems in children whose mother used cannabis during pregnancy. The onset of effects is within minutes when smoked and about 30 minutes to one hour when cooked and eaten. The effects last for between two to six hours.
MaximumYield explains Marijuana
There are various ways by which marijuana can be consumed, such as by smoking a marijuana cigarette, also known as joint. Cannabis can also be smoked in a dry pipe or a water pipe known as a ‘bong’ or mixed with food and eaten or brewed as a tea. When consuming cannabis orally, the products are called “edibles”. Sometimes people also open up cigars, remove the tobacco and replace it with weed, making a blunt and smoking it like a joint. Joints and blunts are sometimes used with other, even more, powerful drugs, such as crack cocaine or PCP (a powerful hallucinogen called phencyclidine).
Pot can also be consumed by the practice of “dabbing” where weed extracts are used such as hash oil/ honey oil (a gooey liquid), wax or budder (a soft solid with a texture like a lip balm) or shatter(a hard, amber colored solid). Cannabis extracts consist of high amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and are sometimes even used in the ERs (Emergency Rooms). It is also very dangerous when trying to make these extracts as many people have caused fires and explosions and have been seriously burned from using butane which is used in the preparation to make the extracts.
Cannabis has also been used in the medicinal field in order to treat diseases and conditions. Medical marijuana is used to treat a variety of different conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Cancer, Crohn’s disease Glaucoma, Multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms and other mental health conditions such as Schizophrenia and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
