What Does Hemp Mean?

Hemp is a type of plant in the cannabis sativa plant family that is grown for a myriad of different purposes. Due to its many industrial uses, hemp is often referred to as “industrial hemp”.

Hemp is extremely low in THC and has little use as a recreational drug. Still, some countries regulate the permissible amount of THC that can be present in commercial hemp.

Largely grown in the northern hemisphere, hemp is one of the most useful plants on the planet and can be refined into a variety of commercially viable items. It can be used for to make paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, eco-friendly clothing, paints, biofuels, animal feed, beauty products, and food.

As a food source, hemp seeds are sprouted and then ground into a hemp-sprout powder that can be used for baking breads or as a paste-dip. Hemp hearts can also be adding to salads, smoothies, and granolas.

Hemp is desirable as an agricultural crop because it is one of the fastest growing plants and has so many uses. It’s been used for making textiles for over 10,000 years. In addition, hemp used to be best-known for its use as a roping material.

Although laws vary regarding modern hemp cultivation, during WWII is was a major product of the US because it had so many uses for the war effort.
