Magnesium (Mg)

Last updated: August 27, 2018

What Does Magnesium (Mg) Mean?

Magnesium is a chemical element represented by the symbol Mg. It occurs naturally in combination with other elements and plays a biological role in both humans and plants.

For plants, magnesium is a micronutrient that is required by plants to produce chlorophyll. A lack of magnesium can result in plants having yellow or yellowing leaves. Magnesium deficiency in plants is more common when soil is lacking organic matter.

Maximum Yield Explains Magnesium (Mg)

Being an essential nutrient for plants, magnesium plays key roles in many different plant functions. One of the most important roles is in the photosynthesis process. This process creates chlorophyll and gives plants their green color.

This is why, when a plant has a magnesium deficiency, it can lead to a yellowing of the leaves and can make a plant more susceptible to plant diseases. In some plants, the importance of magnesium is comparable to phosphorus, which is a primary plant nutrient (macronutrient).

Plants receive magnesium through the soil. However, additional magnesium can be administered to plants that may be suffering from a magnesium deficiency. This can be accomplished through organic compost, leaf sprays, and household Epsom salts. The most effective of these methods is organic compost. Organic compost contains an abundance of magnesium and will provide an ample amount to plants.
