The terpene profile of a strain of cannabis is what gives it its distinctive taste, flavor and smell. Biologically, the purpose of terpenes are to lure in pollinators and to detract predators. There are more than 100 different terpenes that have been identified in the cannabis plant.
Terpenes are secreted by the same glands that cannabinoids are. They have the amazing ability to interact synergistically with the cannabinoids. The terpenes have unique effects as well. For example, linalool can promote relaxation while limonene can elevate the mood... Common terpenes include pinene which smells like pine, myrcene which has an earthy smell, caryophyllene which smells spicy and others.
