Root Restriction

Last updated: November 22, 2021

What Does Root Restriction Mean?

In hydroponics, root restriction is commonly used to enhance the crop’s volume utilization efficiency. As hydroponic plants tend to have a smaller root volume it makes it easier for planters to avoid using deeper containers or massive growth beds. Hydroponic plants are usually exposed to an adequate water supply and well-balanced nutrient solutions, eliminating the need for a larger root system.

Maximum Yield Explains Root Restriction

In some cases, extreme root restriction may have an adverse effect on the crops and bring a drastic loss in productivity. Root restrictions can also trigger growth and developmental issues in plants. If applied properly, mild root restriction can positively affect a plant’s physiology while boosting productivity.

For this reason, it is important to ensure that the plants are exposed to enough oxygen, nutrients, and water to encourage optimal production and growth to bypass the constraints caused by root restriction.

When applying root restriction to hydroponic crops, planters can also use an adequate rooting volume suitable for each plant type. Root restriction is especially beneficial for vegetable seedlings since they grow in harder and shorter transplants that can survive various situations.
