The leaves of a marijuana plant grow in different ways depending on the strain and the size of the plant. When the plant is in the beginning stages, the leaf pattern is basic. When it starts to get larger, the upper part of the plant can display an alternating leaf pattern that goes all of the way up the colas.
The word “phyllotaxy” refers to the structure of leaves on a plant. Alternate leaves grow from the stem singly and they switch sides as the vertical height increases. Instead of pairs of opposing leaves, this leaf pattern appears as stacked. Alternate patterns can include alternate spiral which rotates around the plant in a spiral pattern or alternate distichous growth patterns which is alternating sides back and forth.
